Participating countries and study design

To explore the dynamics of value change, a new wave of research was carried out in 1990. The Institut für Demoskopie in Allensbach, Germany coordinated the 1990 surveys in all European countries, including Austria and countries in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in the US and Canada.

The national datasets were combined into an integrated data set including altogether 27 countries/regions:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great-Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

Representative multi-stage random samples respectively quota samples of the adult population 18 years and older were drawn. Personal interviews with standardized questionnaires were conducted between 1990 and 1993.

A new Steering Committee was entrusted with the scientific supervision of the project. This Steering Committee consisted of: Ruud de Moor (chair, Tilburg University), Karel Dobbelaere (University of Leuven), Loek Halman (Tilburg University), Stephen Harding (ISR, London), Felix Heunks (Tilburg University), Ron Inglehart (University of Michigan), Jan Kerkhofs (University of Leuven), Mrs. Renate Köcher (Institut für Demoskopie), Jacques-René Rabier (European Commission, Brussels), Noel Timms (Leicester University).
